Come on Dads…make a difference at the MADS!

mad-blog-awards-top

I am honoured and proud to have been asked to be a judge for this year’s MADS (that’s Mum and Dads) Awards. For this year, there is a cause to champion: the cause of Dad Bloggers.

Many of you will recall  there was quite a furore following the announcement of last year’s MADS finalists because only one Dad Blogger made the final cut –  the supremely talented Tom  Arber (who co-blogs with his wife Becky at Ar-Blog) in the Photography category.

This cued a flurry of head-scratching and angst amongst our ilk (summarised beautifully in this brilliantly written post by a dad!): Were dads not going enough? Were we not social networky enough? Were we such a tiny minority in the parent blogger world that no matter how loud we shouted it would always come out as a squeak?

Some called for a distinct category for the male of the species; others thought this would be positive discrimination and that dads should be judged against the mums on their own merits, breasts and testicles not withstanding.

In the end, the wise organisers and sponsors of the MADS decided that dads could and should be able to hold their own!

Perhaps all they needed was somebody to bang their drum a little louder. Well, here I am, kettle drum to the left of me, bass drum to the right, holding two massive great cabers ready to bang proud and loud.

I follow lots of dad blogs (and mum blogs and food blogs, too) and there is absolutely no reason why we should not be right up there, at the top of the mountain, slugging it out, word-for-word, photo-for-photo, whimsy-for-whimsy, anecdote-for-anecdote, tip-for-tip, tat-for-tat with our funny, creative, inspiring sisters.

So bring it on. Get stuck in. Identify your favourtie blogs – dads or mums – and nominate away.

There are loads of categories to choose from and I can already think of some worthy contenders who should have a presence in several.

However, I’m not allowed to nominate. I’m a judge. Impartial, see!  But YOU can – and MUST.

There are 16 categories in all, with a fantastic prize for the winning blog attached to each, ranging from a holiday to a Kindle Fire to Mothercare vouchers to Skylanders.

So who are you going to nominate for…

Best Blog Writer

Best Baby Blog

A word about me: What qualifies me to be a judge?

Nothing, really. I’m a blogger, just like everyone else who wants to be nominated. Food and parenting are my whimsies and last year, I thought I might make a shortlist through my Reluctant Housedad blog.

But like lots of dads, I ended up disappointed. And like lots of dads, I concluded I needed to raise my game.

I’ve been blogging about family life since December 2010, ever since my wife and I swapped roles following redundancy from my job as a magazine editor. I became a reluctant housedad to our three young children while my wife went to work and brought home the bacon.

Since our youngest started school, I’ve made a living working from home  as a freelance writer, writing about parenting and lifestyle issues.  There’s more info about all the judges here.

The Blog Where Nothing Interesting Ever Happens

I have read many posts that have asked the question, ‘Why do I blog?’ and after more than a year writing these chronicles I have now reached that almost inevitable stage in the cycle.

It’s been a while since I wrote a post about family life.  Such has been my obsession with food and cooking, I’ve completely neglected to spare a post or two for my kids – and that must be a good thing: for it means that life is pretty much tootling along like the 10 year-old Volvo estate that is our family car.

In short: nothing has happened. Nothing of any note, anyway.

But hang on, my favourite comedy of all-time is Seinfeld – ‘a show about nothing, where nothing happens’. Which in reality, is a show where everything happens on the premise that even the most ordinary people lead extraordinary lives.

I had a look back at my blog archives and realised that I pretty much wrote about nothing all the time. Every family event was recorded, either for posterity, entertainment, or because I simply needed to get it out of my system, y’know, this writing lark being very cathartic etc.

But just lately, I’ve lost that need to commit my thoughts to the cybernet. I realised I was spending way too much time effectively writing a diary for a very few others’ to read and not enough time engaging with the real, physical world.

It wasn’t so much an epiphany; more like an evolution.

I got back in touch with old friends; made new ones in the pub. Stopped writing, started chatting. Stopped seeing every little thing my kids did as fodder for a blog post; started living in the moment.

At first, I felt like a gambler giving up his fix. Instead of betting on everything, I’d be more selective. If something exciting happened, I’d write about it. If nothing exciting happened, I’d carry on with my real world endeavours. And let’s face it, VERY little exciting happens to a housedad, unless you count finding a fiver in a pocket that has survived a 40 degree wash.

My blog has become primarily about the thing that turns me on: cooking. Why write about ironing, when you can write about thrice-cooked chips? It’s a no-brainer.

Or is it? As I reflect on the week since I wrote a family-focused blog (only a week? Christ, it feels like forever), I realise that so much has happened that I will never remember because I won’t have a blog post to remind me about it.

Because that’s what this blog is about, really: an archive of our family life for my children to one day look back on, and perhaps one day to show their own children.

‘What was life like when you were a kid, Dad?’ my grandchildren may ask my own children when they’re parents.

‘Stop asking stupid questions and read your grandad’s blog,’ their parents – my kids – might reply.

• Tune in soon for another instalment of the Blog Where Nothing Interesting Ever Happens But He Keeps On Writing About It Anyway. Just like the post you’ve just read!

Happy New Year to all my visitors…and thank you!

Your interest in me, my life, my recipes, my musings, my opinions and my thoughts means the world to me. No-one writes a blog for it not to be read, otherwise we’d keep padlocked diaries under our pillows instead.

So Thank You, to all my subscribers and visitors, whether deliberate or accidental (yes, I’m looking at you, Dale Winton and Rag Pudding fans!)
