Food news: It’s a cross between a lime and a melon…it’s a LIMELON

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No…it’s a LIMELON. And it’s quite super, ma-an!

This brand new fruit from Spain looks like a melon but has all the zing and sharpness of a lime.

It’s just been launched in supermarkets across the country for £1.49 each.

A spokesman for Budgens, the chain selling the Limelon, said it “is great in salads and the juice tastes delicious in smoothies”.

Chris Tanton, editor of the Fruit Grower magazine, said he thought the Limelon was a good idea.

“It is an interesting diversion,” he added.

“A melon is a nice fruit to eat, but it’s not intensely flavoured.

“Some people might find melons a bit tasteless. Launching it with a different flavour might help increase sales.”

Melons are already Britain’s biggest-selling exotic fruit and last year sales increased by 1.4 per cent.
