My kids have started to get into comics just lately. Before, they’d nag me to buy them for the plastic bit of tut on the cover, but now they actually read them, do the puzzles – and even cook the recipes (with a little help from Yours Truly).
This one is so simple and the results are monstrously good…
Makes 12 cakes
225g self-raising flour
100g butter
50g granulated sugar
1 tbsp milk
1 egg
100g dried fruit (we used mango)
1 cup of mixd nuts, bashed (optional)
1. Sieve the flour into a large bowl. Add the butter and get the kids to use their fingers to rub the mixture into crumbs, then stir in the sugar.
2. Add the fruit and nuts (if using).
3. Whisk the egg in a separate bowl and then add it to the mixture. Stir until combined.
4. Pour in the milk and stir the mixture until it has totally blended. Add more milk if the mix is too crumbly.
5. Line a cupcake tray with paper cases and dollop a tablespoon or two of mixture into each.
6. Put in a preheated oven at 180C/Gas 4 for 15 mins.
7. Allow to cool, then sprinkle a little sugar on top.
• And, no, this isn’t a sponsored post. My lad bought the comic with his pocket money for cleaning the oven at the weekend.

This has made me smile! My son has that magazine and we made these too. I took pics but forgot to stick it on the blog. We used glacé cherries and they turned out really nice
Thanks Viv. I’m learning that a route to getting them reading is via comics based on the computer games they’re obsessed with, They want to do the Rox again, so will get some glace cherries next time
They look good!
Can’t wait until mine get into comics properly. Some proper Dark Knight, Avengers, Sandman… No recipes in there, though.
Mine was Roy of the Rovers. I’ve still got a box of yellowing first editions somewhere.
These looks great. There are some great little recipes in the comics sometimes. Your boys are lovely.
What a lovely thing to say. They have their moments! Thanks
what’s got into you? baking cakes? I thought that was the wife’s department! They do look good though & I can now impress my kids without having to buy the comic….oh & how much does your son charge for cleaning ovens as mine is very much in need! x
Ha. Must have been all that Mummy influence at the weekend
My seven-year-old is rather into Moshi Monsters. It’s verging on an obsession. I think we might just have to make these!
